I opened my curtains this morning to see a totally different perspective on the world from last night
The only reason last nights view was even possible was for the pile of rubble that used to be a proud building that would have blocked the view.
Everywhere we went today there were bullet and mortar shell holes
Strategically placed buildings, on corners of main streets or high vantage points, were worst than most.
Our local friend described how snipers in the hills that surround the town made it unsafe to even cross the streets.
He lost a good friend to left over mines in the hills just a few years ago.
I said yesterday ”I’m not sure what I expected for one night in Bosnia and Herzegovina”
That statement still stands
But I certainly didn’t expect this.
A town that was clearly devastated, yet is once again so full of life
The locals were lovely
The place felt so safe
All day I found myself wondering what did these people, in this peaceful place, possibly do to deserve this?
It felt in this place like it could have happened to any of us.
I grew up with this place on the news. Innocent children caught in a war. Today I met some of those children. All grown up and rebuilding their beloved city.
I wasn’t there for long enough to see much, but we both want to go back for a holiday to see the real Sarajevo.
