A surreal day in Christchurch. We see TV images of major damage caused by mother nature around the world, but we didn’t really think it would happen in our city,

We were woken at 4.35am by a horrendous earthquake. We sleep on the third floor of our house so the earthquake and aftershocks were virtually continuous as we kept shaking for a long time after each quake. However we were lucky to have very little damage to our property ……. although have a rather spooked dog every time we have an aftershock, and there have been almost 30 during the day!!

This image was taken at the end of a stunning spring day, which would normally be greeted with enthusiasm by everyone in our city, but it is very deceptive. I have no photos of damage as we have been told all day to keep off the roads unless essential, and to keep away from the damaged areas.

We are fine, and have power and water back on tonight, but our thoughts are with all of those in the area who have major damage, and we await with apprehension to find out what tomorrow brings as the damage throughout the city, and to essential city services, is fully accessed.

Edit – We have been away for a week so this was a shaky home-coming. Intended back blipping this morning – but plans were changed so will try to catch up tomorrow!!
