It is exactly one year since we had an earthquake magnitude 6 or higher, and I certainly hope we never experience any more of that size, or even any considerably less than that.
Our ground movement has quietened and the inner city demolition workers are getting a well earned break over the Christmas and New Year period, so the central city is quiet and peaceful.
In the central city area there have been about 1350 commercial buildings demolished, or partially demolished, so there is very little remaining. This Interactive Demolition Map shows the scale of the destruction in Christchurch.
The most obvious omissions in this photo are:
Grand Chancellor Hotel
Hoyts and Science Alive
HSBC building (the original one)
…… just to mention a few.
However 2013 is a new year, a year of progress, rebuilding, repairing, and exciting developments will start to bring back some life to our central city.
