I gave CJ my phone with a baby rattle loaded on it,

it’s been a few weeks since he last had it and there was a marked change.

First he shook it, it rattled, he shook and shook and shook.

Connecting his action with the result is new. His rattles must be working.

But what happened next

I sat with my mouth open.

Unlike his rattles, he knows this has a screen,

like his beloved iPad.

He stopped shaking long enough to look at the moving shapes on the screen,

and then, delicately, he reached out to touch them

not a bash, but a soft touch with one finger

they moved under his finger, so he tapped again.

He sat quietly, focused on the hand eye coordination of gentle play.

I can’t believe how quickly his brain has started absorbing the world around him,
