My Dad is always on my mind on Anzac Day and this is a photo of him with his best mate Wal during their training in Canada, learning to fly Beauforts. They first met in 1939 when they shared a two-man tent while learning to fly, and they remained friends for the rest of their lives. We spent many happy family holidays with them in Christchurch, or at our home in Alexandra.

I am sure they would be looking down and having a chuckle this week when gd played golf at Hanmer, and Wal’s son was also playing.

Their first conversation went a bit like this, starting with gd ………

Hi, are you up here for a few days?

Yep – we bought a bach here late last year

Great, where’s your bach?

Denby Place

Oh, the first bach we bought was in Denby Place. You know the 2 units down the lane ….. we owned the back one.

Hmmmmm – that’s one we bought!!!

After seventy five years of friendship I’m sure Wal and Dad would have been delighted at that co-incidence 🙂
