Poplar Lane is now the middle of nowhere.
The tram track was laid through here to enable easy access to the bars , and the nearby stadium, for the Rugby World Cup in 2011. The line was almost completed when the earthquakes struck, but the rugby games planned for Christchurch were never played here as there was no stadium, no accommodation, no bars or cafes, and no entertainment.
Now this tram track, which was never used, leads to absolutely nowhere ….. but hopefully, one day in the future, this site will become a vibrant area once again.
Edit – this article is in the paper today (thursday 22/05) about a new bar being developed to the left of this picture. I did see some activity there, towards High St, but didn’t realise that a bar was being developed and is due to open in 6 weeks. Good news 🙂
