Access to this memorial has been blocked since the earthquakes but I noticed in this morning’s paper that the barricades had been removed ………… so on my way through the city I stopped for a quick blip of these heroic women.
Kate Sheppard was a Christchurch woman who led the suffrage movement which gained NZ women the right to vote – a very brave group of women who faced huge opposition and aggression during their campaign
On 19 September 1893 New Zealand was the first country in the world to allow women to vote. Definitely an achievement worth celebrating …….. especially when we are hear of the horrendous treatment of women and children in many countries around the world today.Edit -I just noticed this is my 1840th blip – and 1840 is a significant year in NZ history when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and organised European settlements began – and I have blipped another important historical event. What a coincidence 🙂
