Spent the day exploring Fraser Island – the largest sand island in the world and a World Heritage site. We spent the first part of our trip travelling through rain forest in a four wheel drive bus bumping over very soft, winding, pot-holed sand roads, and then travelled along the beach to see a freshwater spring-fed stream, coloured sand cliffs and a shipwreck. There are lot of 4 wheel drive trucks and camp sites along the beach. We decided to take a flight over the island and saw the very dense forest from the air and the beautiful beaches all around the island, but unfortunately it rained and we could only see Lake McKenzie through the gloom – but drove to it later in the day and swam in the warm waters and played with the very fine pure silicon sand.

The planes use the beach as a runway so was a new experience – especially when we had to abort our first landing attempt because a convoy of 4 wheelers were driving along the ‘runway’. Not sure how they felt when they looked in their rear vision mirrors and saw a low flying plane rapidly approaching!!
