We headed toward Banff today to look for the site of an old airfield near Boyndie. My dad was based there during WW2 and flew mosquitos through the Norwegian fjords.

After some googling it was reasonably easy to find as it now a wind farm and a go-kart track. Both very appropriate as the windmills look like giant aircraft propellers, and the karters are definitely thrill seekers, as were the pilots many years ago.

My dad was a car fanatic so would be happy to know the end of one runway is now being used by young speedsters. The Scottish go-kart championships are being held here this weekend so there was plenty of activity as the club men prepared the site and the boys practiced on the track. We very grateful to a couple of club men who were happy to tell us some of the history and show us photos of the old airfield which are displayed in the clubrooms..

Definitely a thrill for me to see this site, the remains of the old control tower and some of the barracks, and to see that it is being well used by enthusiastic young lads ….. and their dads 🙂

Many thanks to Fraser for sparing some time for us, and best wishes to his son for the championships. One of the boys from this club has been British champion four times ………. that’s an impressive record for a little local club run by very enthusiastic volunteers.
