Does anyone else remember the CRAY supercomputer???
It was one of the most powerful computers ever created in the early 90s… I believe it filled a room.
I remember reading that it was used to calculate Pi to an increadible lenght. Quite a feat at the time.
Things have clearly moved on a bit. I am looking at a new laptop at the moment. One of the tests of processor speed that a number of places us is to caculate Pi to. A few million digits.
It takes around a minute and a half on a standard laptop.
Curiosity was too much so I downloaded a ‘super Pi’ app to see how long it would take on my work machine – I wouldn’t really consider that a super computer though.
Anyway, now is the first chance I’ve had to play. I have some downtime as I”m on the train.
I’m sure that makes me a “Super Commuter”.
In other words, I woke up in a panic thismorning thinking I was later for work. You see the sun was already up! My first reaction wasn’t so much “I’m Late”, but more “Where am I?”. Clearly having the sun wake you up isn’t a very english thing!
