Today I arrived at work and logged into my computer. It was going a bit slow so at about 7:27 I decided to reboot it. While rebooting disaster struck – the server died in a ball of flames which engulfed half of the building. In the panic I managed to save 2 co-workers, my boss and a group of random kids from certain death. (note – artistic licence may have been used in the previous paragraph).
Anyway, it eventually turned out to be a failed power supply unit on the server which dies has I was restarting, causing me to be stuck 1/2 way through logging in. I had no choice but to re boot and try again.
It was then that I realised how bad this was, nothing was responding to my attempts to login, an quick check of the server revealed that this failure was not just ‘something small’ and there was no power going to the server – it was time to all the technician! He came down and said ‘hmmm’ and left again. A while later someone else arrived with a new power supply under their arms. The real annoying thing was that the other two that were already logged in when this crashed were fine – if only I hadn’t logged off!!!
At about 10.32 we finally kicked off again and could log back in (only 3 hours after I had lost connection). I should point out that by then I had had two coffees, and read the newspaper twice (there was nothing else to do!).
This relief only lasted a short time until I realised that because I had been halfway through logging in when the server had died, all of my settings were lost in limbo!
All of my saved settings had been lost – including my outlook address book, my internet cookies (including passwords etc), my desktop settings, my personal dictionary – EVERYTHING!!! Most of this is back to normal, but it has cost me a lot of the day :-/
Considering that this is Monday, and there are still 4 days left this week, I think that I should warn everyone that the possibility of me going Postal this week may be slightly higher than normal…
