Missing Hobby

Its been a while since the last update… And its starting to concern me a lot.

The actual lack of updates isn’t so concerning (or surprising), its more a symptom of a bigger problem.

We have no internet.

In the past I have had workmates mention how much they miss the gym if they are on holiday, or whatever, and can’t get to the gym for a while… I never realy understood.

But I am struggling without the net.

I thought being without the net would be hard, don’t get me wrong here. But I’m not completely net isolated. I still have a Blackberry, a N95 Nokia that gives amazing mobile web, a broadband connection at work, and a wireless internet card.

Its not so much the net I miss, its not the information, its not the email or chat. Not RSS, news or answers.

Its some things I never expected.

I miss the ‘people’. Posting photos for Mayo to suggest improvements. Sending ‘useful’ snippts of info to people, and getting the same in return. Viewing Cass’s photos, reading peoples diarys (stuff that’s not quite the same reading at work as it is sitting on the couch at home ).

And most surprIsing, I miss ‘geeking’.

Just being a geek.

I have an amazing urge to play with some code. To rebuild something. To make my PXT script work for the UK, or add GPS updates on where I am to my site.

Anyway, today it got too much… I had to find some geeking I could do offline.

Its not the gym I crave, its my hobbie – a mental gym I suppose.

On that bombshell I must run, its time to install Linux on a portable Hard Drive.

Tux is about to become my new friend.

  1. (sobs at the thought of support questions relating to an offline install of Linux…on the other side of the world)

not really 😉 It’ll be fun. And just when you’ve got it all sorted out, I’ll be there to install Ubuntu on my laptop 🙂

Geeking rules! Some suggestions: you can still do stuff on your N95 right? Do you have an offline PC? If so – CODE! 😉 Also, if you do the Linux install, take a photo evidence timeline of the process, so that I can digg it after it works/fails 🙂 It’s a surefire frontpage article, I’m not kidding 🙂
