We went to gd’s nephews robotic milking shed tonight.
Fascinating – no people required, just computers.
The cows come and go as they please and these two are waiting for their turn at one of the milking robots, which operate 24 hours a day.
Sensors at the entry gate draft them through the shed if they can give 6 litres, or back to the holding pens and then to the paddock if they carry less milk than that.
A tasty food supply is supplied while the cows are milked, and that is a temptation to some of the sneaky cows to come into the shed several times a day.
Some other cunning cows come into the shed when it starts to rain, and just stay in the holding pens to keep dry.
Every cow is monitored at every milking for milk quantity and quality, food eaten, times of day they come into the shed, etc. etc., and the computer is a mass of facts and figures and statistics.
The jersey cows were real characters and had personality plus, and the owners know the traits of all of these cows who can be constantly watched via continual video links by phone. The owners only visit the shed twice each day ………….. unless the robot in the shed phones them to tell them there is a problem. Sometimes that is at 3am to say there have been no cows in for milking in the past hour!!!
