An unplanned trip on this very quaint train with an interesting history – the only train track which runs along the center of SH1, and has been restored by many very enthusiastic volunteers.
After yesterday’s rail trail cycling we were fascinated to learn about this track which is being developed as a segment of the NZ cycle trail. At the moment the train runs from Kawakawa to the longest curved wooden rail bridge in the southern hemisphere, and hopefully in the future (after a lot more construction work) it will be able to go to Opua. The cycle trail will soon go from Opua to the other side of the bridge, and when the bridge repair, with widening to allow room for bikes, is completed it will link through to the track we biked yesterday.
