This magnificent home was hidden behind a derelict building and was only discovered in the 1990s when the building was to be demolished. Archaeological digs were completed, then the restoration began in 1990 to restore the home to it’s original condition so it could be opened to the public in 1993. It has been furnished to replicate the home of William Snawsell, the Alderman and Lord Mayor of York, who lived here in the 1430s.
Many of the rooms contain displays of life at that time. The tools of trade of the barber/doctor were rather gruesome, but the display of local plants and seeds, and their uses in medicine and cooking, was fascinating.
An excellent exhibition not to be missed in York.
