dISASTER STRUCK LAST WEEK…

aCTUALLY, DISASTER STRUCK IN MY FIRST SENTANCE WHEN i BUMPED THE cAPS LOCK kEY… but I’m sure we can all get over that.

So, where were we? Oh, thats right – last week.

I was happily ‘working’ away on my computer and ‘happened’ to drop by my site, or as the case may be – I didn’t.

It just didn’t load.

For a brief second I thought my site had been blocked – but no, it was a ‘timeout’ error, not the standard “Access to this site has been blocked in line with some stupid f’n policy”.

Things got worse yesterday when I realised I couldn’t get the the site from any vodafone connection – inside the firewall or otherwise. It wouldn’t work on my phone, or on my wireless PC card. This was not looking good.

So yesterday I logged a call to get it fixed, as a number of staff were irate (A number of us have changed the ‘homepage’ on our phones to be a special page on my site that links to all the important ‘phone tools’ on the net.

And today it all came back – everythings working again… Did you miss me?

Anyway, onto the point of the story (I figure you have more background than you need). I suddenly realised how hard it must be for people that can’t get to mission critical sites from work (like trademe, stuff, trademe again, and in Adams case – find-a-date.com).

One of the guys at training tonight said Fisher and Pikyel has blocked ‘everything’ (ie. Trademe). I’m pretty sure this isn’t good for staff moral etc, and hence probably not a well thought through policy.

I mean, if someone is spending too much time on the net, then deal with them directly (ie. Adams Uni job). But stopping everyone from accessing the sites is just a bit heavy handed. And I’m pretty sure cutting of some sites doesn’t stop the people in question finding some way to waste time (ie. Adam again).
